Voicemail is apparently a dying technology according to this article.

91 percent of people under 30 respond to text messages within an hour, and they are four times more likely to respond to texts than to voice messages within minutes, according to a 2008 study for Sprint conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation. Even adults 30 and older are twice as likely to respond within minutes to a text than to a voice message, the study found.

OK I admit, I’m more likely to respond quickly to a text message than I am to a voicemail, but if I’m out and about, or even just don’t have the phone in my hand and miss a call, I appreciate it if people leave me a voicemail message. This is essential if you are looking for work.

I had a really crackly voicemail message and the recruiter told me about it, so as soon as I had finished listening to her, I googled the best voicemail greeting to have on my phone and this is what I have:

Hi this is Humaira, can you please leave your name and number and I will call you back as soon as I can. Thanks very much!

Now, my old greeting had:

Can you please leave your name, number and message and I will call you back as soon as I can.

But I realised they were going to leave a message anyway, so there was no point in asking them to!

I don’t think voicemail is outdated, I use it and I used it when I was working, but its true it took me ages to figure out how to use my work voicemail than it was to figure out how to use my mobile voicemail.

So, do you think voicemail is obsolete?
